Filter Protector / Cooler

Oil Filter protector / cooler slips over the oil filter and clamps in place

(it protects from stone damage and provides oil cooling)

The oil cooler will fit "Most" externally mounted oil coolers under 3" in diameter.
Send me e-mail for specifics. Eg: the VTX must have a few fins removed to clear the engine...

An InexpeAn inexpensive Oil Filter Protector / Cooler

Over two years ago, during an oil change, I found a huge dent in my oil filter. As you all know, our filters are exposed to debris that is kicked up by our front tire, and this is probably what happened to me. At that time a fellow forum member had just run out of oil due to a hole in his filter. He caught it in time and the engine was not harmed. This really started me thinking about some kind of protection.

After searching for months, I located  a company who manufactured a cooling device for theoil filters on sports cars. A bit of  machining and fitting on a sample they shipped me and had a "slip on" rock guard ! The company later agreed to manufacture them for me.

After a ride I noticed that I could not touch the rock guard because it was so hot ! This little hummer was dissipating a lot of heat while moving. This is the reason they were being installed on sports cars! In checking total surface areas I discovered that the stock oil filter has about 20 square inches of surface area while the finned protector had about 60 square inches of area. That's a big difference!

You will notice that almost no manufactures will state the temperature drop their oil coolers produce, mainly because conditions are so variable . I will make no claims either for the same reason, but common sense says a three fold increase in area has to provide additional oil cooling!

I finally located a rider who recorded the oil heat loss using this same filter on his Harley Sportster. Using an accurate dipstick thermometer, at 70 degrees ambient air temperature and a speed of 55 MPH, he showed a 21 degree difference in oil temperature! Not bad for a simple slip on heat exchanger..

He claimed that if, like our bikes, a wider front tire and fender is used, less cooling will occur. Also at higher speeds the engine heat output climbs much higher, resulting in proportionately less cooling by this finned device. The same holds true for very slow speeds where less air flows over the fins. My subsequent tests have shown about the same oil temperature drop on various other motorcycles.

For superior cooling, use a radiator type in line cooler, which is more efficient (and expensive).

The heat sink is a heavily finned, anodized aluminum cylinder, that is slipped over the oil filter - no need to remove the filter - just clean it first. It's held in place by a buffed stainless clamp, with the tightening nut hidden in back of the filter. The band must be tightened snugly to provide good heat contact with the filter.

The protector will fit oil filters from 2.5" (Gold Wing, Valk's, Yamaha Royals and Stars, etc.) up to 3".  High Temp BBQ paint may be used if you don't like the aluminum color.

As usual, you can return it within 30 days ( as long as you haven't run over a skunk or too many squirrels )!
