As reported in the Lyon County Times, Lyon County Kentucky from May 30 through July 25, 1963 (part of this series comes from a reprint of an article first appearing on October 26, 1906). The punctuation, spelling, and language have been largely left intact.

About the middle of the seventeenth century Jacob Doom was born in Germany. In the year 1781 he came to America with his family, his son, Henry Doom, being born at sea as they came over the Atlantic Ocean. Upon his arrival in America he made his way west as it was then called, and settled at or near where Bardstown is now located. There he reared a large family, three of whom, Henry, Jacob and David, set out to find a home farther west, passing down the Ohio river to its mouth in crudely constructed boats and up the Cumberland to the Eddy just below the city, (Kuttawa) landing there, being the first settlers in that part of our country.
Jacob Doom, the oldest of the three brothers, who came to Western Kentucky, not being very well pleased with this section, left soon after his arrival and located in Livingston County.
David Doom, from whom most of the connections trace their origin, was born in Germany, Dec. 10, 1779. After reaching this section of Kentucky he married Miss Charlotte Sullivan, who was born January 18th, 1789. The old family Bible containing these records is now the property of R. J. Doom, (possession of R. J. Yates 1935) who is a grandson of David Doom, the grand old German.
In preparing this sketch for publication the writer has been at no little pains and trouble getting an item here and one there; putting it all together and adjusting differences until we think we have succeeded in a reasonable measure in getting up a sketch absolutely correct and one worthy of preservation by all the family connection, who care to keep a record of the family. We are indebted to Mr. Al Doom, R. J. Doom, Joe L. Doom, Columbus Doom, Alford Doom and Mark T. Doughter for information enabling us to send forth this sketch. We hope the sketch will be interesting to the connection and especially to the rising generation.
To the union of David and Charlotte Sullivan were born thirteen children, of whom, Charlotte, died young. The names of the other twelve were: Nathaniel, Jacob, John, Alford, Nancy Boughter, Barbary Lake (who afterwards married Savage) Hannah Black (who afterwards married Walker), Henry, David, Harriet Williams and Columbus. Of this set of children, there are only three now living, Columbus and Alford Doom and Nancy Polk, who are now old and respected citizens of the county, in their eighties.
Now taking up the grandchildren of David and Charlotte Doom, we will bring the sketch within the knowledge of those who may read this and at this point we will leave the matter for them to fill out.
Nathaniel Doom was the father of James Doom, Nat Ella Wake and Robt. C. Doom (little Bob).
The children of Jacob Doom are John, Al, Charlotte, Theodocia, Mary and Margarette.
Those of Barbary Lake are John Lake, Drusie Eads and Charlotte Krone, and those of her second marriage are Alford and Joe Sowash and Mary McQuigg.
The children of John Doom are Robt. J., John B., Kirb S., Emma and Nannie.
Alford Doom, who is still living, has the following children: John Columbus and Leticia Doom.
The children of Nancy Boughter are Mary Ann Lady, Irene Jones, Amanda Langston, Adaline Walker, Eliza J. Williams, Amos K., and Mark T. Boughter.
Hannah Doom first married a Black and became the mother of Dan C., Robt. and Chas. J. Black, Hellen Wolfe and Alice Henson; she then married Walker and became the mother of David, Ella Marshall and Grace Bennett.
Henry Doom was the father of Lizzie Bruce, David, Leonard, Sidney and Will Doom, Ollie Yates and Ida Cardin.
David Doom, who lived across the river below this city, (Kuttawa) was the father of Nick, Sallie F. Arnold, Harrison, Drusie and Pat Doom.
Harriet Doom was married to Samuel Williams and to their union was born Henry, David, Charlie and Lee Williams, Mary Glenn, Dora Glenn, Lillie Glasgow and Ida Boughter.
(June 27, 1963)
Benjamin Doom, who lived across the river from this city, (Kuttawa) reared a large and respectable family of thirteen, all of whom lived to have families of their own, and two of whom, John Doom and Sophia Wake, have passed over the last river. Mrs. Josephine Braswell, of this city, is the oldest (but she may not like to see this in print). Julia, the estimable wife of our life long friend, Robt. J. Doom, Laura Wadlington, Anna Owens, Nat McClelland, Benjamin and Chas. Doom, Docia Griffin, Eva Johnson and Lillie Ray.
Uncle Columbus Doom, who is still living, is the father of J. Fred Doom, Lula Robinson, Cal Lisenby and Peggy Doom.
Henry Doom, one of three brothers to settle in this section, married Polly Bennett and to this union were born Holly Fairbanks Zollinger, Jacob, Elijah, John, Harvey Doom, Martha Templeton, Mary Martin, Stephen Doom, Nancy Polk and Hopie Mahaney. In order to give a comprehensive sketch of this part of the Doom Connection, we give the order of succession as in case of David Doom above.
The sons and daughters of Henry Doom and their descendants are as follows: Holly first married Fairbanks and to this union was born Anna Polk; she afterwards married Zollinger and to her by this union was born Geo. and Henry Zollinger, Lizzie Sizemore and Cassie Bellday.
The children of Jacob Doom are James and Joe Doom, Laura Linn, Louisa Yates and Sallie Yates.
The children of Elijah Doom are Felix and Henry Doom, Mary Sexton, Anna Sexton, Cassie Lowery, Emma Koon and Eliza Koon.
The children of John Doom are Forest, Adam and Fred H. Doom and Lovie Jones.
The children of Harvey Doom are Pauline Yates, Chittenden, Elwood and Charlie Doom, Margarett Duckworth, Orpa Sizemore and Emma McElhaney.
Mrs. Martha Templeton being the mother of the following named children: Anna Doom, Henry, James and W. C. Templeton, Ellen Sizemore, Betty Krone, George Templeton and James Jones.
(July 4, 1963)
Mrs. Mary Martin the wife of Andrew Martin, was the mother of Mattie Reed, Elvira Sexton, Hopie Marshall, Harriet Black, Grace Jones, Elvin Perry, Irene Wills and Ambrose Martin.
The children of Nancy Polk are James and Charlie Polk and Mary Duvall.
We have been unable to trace the descendants of Hopie Mahaney, if there be any.
Jacob Doom, father of Henry and David, settled in Livingston county where many bearing their names still reside. We are informed that a large connection of the Doom family reside in Nelson county, Ky., in and about Bardstown. The Doom family and connection of Lyon County, Ky., are industrious, honest to a penny, economical, none of the name having been accused of crime, quiet citizens, many of them belong to the church; most of the great number are farmers and cultivate sociability, especially the female portion. In young womanhood, most of them are handsome, but this is more than be truthfully said of the male portion. The family seems to hold a name all along down the generation. The Johns, Jakes, Benjamins, Columbus, Nathaniels and other names are prominent.
The Doom blood has permeated almost every family in this section. A Wake, Lyon, Wolfe and Savages have found favor, in some instances a Kirb is used and then we hear of a Breckenridge. Every Doom by name almost is a democrat in politics. Few among them that maybe said to be office hunters, but when they get an office they rather like it, at any rate they belong to the class that like to hold on to a good thing, and they know good things when they see them.
(July 11, 1963)
They are mainly situated in the lower half of the county where their fore-fathers settled in the early part of the eighteenth century. Henry, Jacob, David settled the old Doom place, where the family grave yard has been constantly kept. They settled the farm on the creek near Macedonia church, having owned several hundred acres of land in the north-west section of Lyon County. The old burying ground is still the place where they deposit their dead and a move will soon be put on foot to erect, near that point, a Methodist church. This is a great need as no shelter is now afforded.
When we write of these old characters and individuals we seem to think of them as something afar off, but their bodies are smoldering back to dust in their resting places in the old grave yard. Some of the best people in the county have been laid to rest in the Doom grave yard. The living have many loved ones resting there and around these graves and grave stones cluster memories that may revive in the world beyond. To contemplate the dead and to show our affection and love for the departed are acts of our better nature and make us better men and women. The greed seems to be in us all for riches, but sooner or later we shall all fall a victim to the grim monster of death that knows no influence between the rich and poor, but who will sweep us all into eternity.
--The above history was started in the Lyon County Herald last August, and in changing management the copy was lost. Due to the interest of different parties the history was secured again and we are glad to be able to publish same. Editor.
